Assessment of micronutrient extractants from soils of Paraná, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sarto,Marcos Vinicius Mansano; Steiner,Fábio; Lana,Maria do Carmo.
In Brazil, plant-available micronutrients in the soil can be determined by several chemical extractants, the most common of which are dilute acid and chelating solutions. The purpose of this study was to assess the extractants 0.1 mol L-1 HCl, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3 and DTPA for analysis of the micronutrients Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn in soils from the state of Paraná. In samples from 12 soils (0-20 cm layer), wheat was planted (Triticum aestivum), grown for 42 days after emergence, and then bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) for 38 days. At the end of each planting period, the soil was sampled again. All extractants tested to assess the availability of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn correlated with each other. The efficiency of the extractants HCl, Mehlich-3 and DTPA in assessing...

Azospirillum lipoferum and nitrogen fertilization effect on chlorophyll content, nutrients uptake and biometric properties of Zea mays L. Agrociencia
Davaran-Hagh,Elnaz; Mirshekari,Bahram; Reza-Ardakani,Mohammad; Farahvash,Farhad; Rejali,Farhad.
Integrated nutrient management is a major agronomic practice which brings together all methods to support plants nutritional requirement. However, the interaction of these methods together is very complex and needs to be studied in different climatic conditions. So, the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and Azospirillum lipoferum inoculation on maize (Zea mays L.) growth, yield and nutrients uptake was determined in this study. The hypothesis was that the bacterial inoculation decreases the need for N fertilizer application without reducing plant yield. Therefore, we carried out a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Nitrogen at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 % concentrations of the recommended dose, i.e. 150 kg N ha-1...

BIOFORTIFICATION, AN ALTERNATIVE TO REDUCE FOOD INSECURITY AND ITS ADVERSE EFFECTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: A HONDURAS CASE STUDY AgEcon
Perez Suarez, Salomon.
Food insecurity can generate nutritional problems such as iron deficiency anemia, which in countries like Honduras is a moderate public health problem. The AgroSalud project is enhancing the iron content of beans and rice in order to improve the iron intake of vulnerable groups, especially children under five years and pregnant women. Iron- biofortified rice and beans together can reduce the deficit in iron intake by more than a 100% depending on the age group, farmer adoption and other variables. This, in turn, would increase the number of healthy (disability-adjusted life years, DALYs) years that the Honduran population could live.

Changing Biogeochemistry of the Southern Ocean and Its Ecosystem Implications ArchiMer
Henley, Sian F.; Cavan, Emma L.; Fawcett, Sarah E.; Kerr, Rodrigo; Monteiro, Thiago; Sherrell, Robert M.; Bowie, Andrew R.; Boyd, Philip W.; Barnes, David K. A.; Schloss, Irene R.; Marshall, Tanya; Flynn, Raquel; Smith, Shantelle.
The Southern Ocean plays a critical role in regulating global climate as a major sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), and in global ocean biogeochemistry by supplying nutrients to the global thermocline, thereby influencing global primary production and carbon export. Biogeochemical processes within the Southern Ocean regulate regional primary production and biological carbon uptake, primarily through iron supply, and support ecosystem functioning over a range of spatial and temporal scales. Here, we assimilate existing knowledge and present new data to examine the biogeochemical cycles of iron, carbon and major nutrients, their key drivers and their responses to, and roles in, contemporary climate and environmental change. Projected increases in...

Contribution of electroactive humic substances to the iron-binding ligands released during microbial remineralisation of sinking particles ArchiMer
Whitby, Hannah; Bressac, Matthieu; Sarthou, Geraldine; Ellwood, Michael J.; Guieu, Cécile; Boyd, Philip W..
Iron is a key micronutrient in seawater, but concentrations would be negligible without the presence of organic ligands. The processes influencing the ligand pool composition are poorly constrained, limiting our understanding of the controls on dissolved iron distributions. To address this, the release of iron and iron‐binding ligands during the microbial remineralisation of sinking particles was investigated by deploying in situ particle interceptor/incubator devices at subsurface sites in the Mediterranean Sea and Subantarctic. Analyses revealed the pool of released ligands was largely dominated by electroactive humic substances (74 ± 28%). The release of ligands during remineralisation ensured that concurrently released iron remained in solution, which...

A number of trace metals play essential roles in marine ecosystem structure and biological productivity. Until recently, it has been argued that phytoplankton access primarily dissolved iron, while particulate iron was considered a refractory material with little use biologically and limited interaction with the dissolved pool. In order to assess the transfer mechanisms between sediment-sourced particulate trace metals and the dissolved pool, we conducted a 14-month incubation that reacted resuspended sediments with natural seawater, both originating from the Kerguelen area (KEOPS cruises; Southern Ocean), in the dark, and at concentrations replicating natural conditions. Three types of sediments were investigated (named BioSi, BioSi + Ca, and Basalt),...

Crassostrea gigas ferritin: cDNA sequence analysis for two heavy chain type subunits and protein purification ArchiMer
Durand, Jean-pierre; Goudard, Françoise; Pieri, Jacques; Escoubas, Jean-michel; Schreiber, Nathalie; Cadoret, Jean-paul.
Ferritin has been shown as being the principal iron storage in the majority of living organisms. In marine species, ferritin is also involved in high-level accumulation of Po-210. As part of our work on the investigation of these radionuclides' concentration in natural environment, ferritin was searched at the gene and protein level. Ferritin was purified from the visceral mass of the oyster Crassostrea gigas by ion-exchange chromatography and HPLC. SDS-PAGE revealed one band of 20 kDa. An Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) library was screened and led to the identification of two complementary DNA (cDNA) involved in ferritin subunit expression. The complete coding sequences and the untranslated regions (UTRs) of the two genes were obtained and a 5' Rapid...

The objective of this work was to study the production of siderophores by endophytic bacteria Methylobacterium spp., which occupy the same ecological niche as Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp) in citrus plants. The siderophore production of Methylobacterium strains was tested according to chromeazurol agar assay test (CAS), Csáky test (hydroxamate-type) and Arnow test (catechol-type). In addition, the ability of Xfp to use siderophores, in vitro, produced by endophytic bacteria as source of iron, was evaluated. All 37 strains of Methylobacterium spp. tested were CAS-positive for siderophore production. Methylobacterium spp. produced hydroxamate-type, but not catechol-type siderophores. In vitro growth of Xfp was stimulated by the presence of...

Determination of iron-porphyrin-like complexes at nanomolar levels in seawater ArchiMer
Vong, Lilita; Laes, Agathe; Blain, Stéphane.
A new method for the non-specific determination of iron-porphyrin-like complexes in natural waters has been developed. It is based on the chemiluminescent oxidation of the luminol in the presence of dioxygen (O-2) at pH 13. The method has been implemented in a FIA manifold that allowed the direct injection of seawater. The limit of detection is 0.11 nM of equivalent hemin (Fe-protoporphyrin IX). Fe2+, Fe3+, H2O2, siderophore (deferoxamin mesylate), humic acid and phytic acid did not interfere when the), were present at the concentrations expected in seawater. Metal free porphyrin and Mg, Cu, Co porphyrin complexes did not induce a significant chemiluminescent signal. Poisoned unfiltered samples could be stored for several weeks before analyses. The new...

Dextran iron in anemic lambs: effects on reticulocytosis and free radical production Ciência Rural
Rocha,Ricardo Xavier da; Bondan,Carlos; Marinho,Roberto; Lopes,Sônia Terezinha dos Anjos; Cecim,Marcelo.
Anemia due to worm infection is a major cause of loss in the sheep industry, due to deaths, drop in average daily gains and long recovery time following treatment. The present experiment was aimed at evaluating the oxidative status and the recovery of red blood cell (RBC) profile in lambs with induced anemia by bleeding, treated or not with dextran iron. Ten ram lambs 5 to 7 months old were used. Blood samples were drawn every other day and when reached packed cell volume (PCV) of 15% were randomly allocated (day zero) to one of the experimental groups. Treated group received a single dose of 25mg per kg body weight of a commercial formulation of dextran iron, the control group received no treatment. Blood samples were taken on days 0, 7, 14, and 21 after...

Effect of iron on the activation of the MAPK/ERK pathway in PC12 neuroblastoma cells Biol. Res.
MUÑOZ,PABLO; ZAVALA,GABRIELA; CASTILLO,KAREN; AGUIRRE,PABLA; HIDALGO,CECILIA; NÚÑEZ,MARCO T.
Recent evidence suggests that reactive oxygen species function as second messenger molecules in normal physiological processes. For example, activation of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate receptor results in the production of ROS, which appears to be critical for synaptic plasticity, one of the cellular mechanisms that underlie learning and memory. In this work, we studied the effect of iron in the activation of MAPK/ERK pathway and on Ca2+ signaling in neuronal PC12 cells. We found that iron-dependent generation of hydroxyl radicals is likely to modulate Ca2+ signaling through RyR calcium channel activation, which, in turn, activates the MAPK/ERK pathway. These findings underline the relevance of iron in normal neuronal function.

Effect of liming on micronutrient availability to soybean grown in soil under different lengths of time under no tillage Agronomy
Moreira, Silvino Guimarães; Prochnow, Luís Ignácio; Pauletti, Volnei; Silva, Bruno Montoani; Kiehl, Jorge de Castro; Silva, Carine Gregório Machado.
The effect of liming on the availability of micronutrients to soybean cultivated during different numbers of years under no tillage (NT) was investigated. The treatments consisted of the number of years under NT (three, six, and nine years) and five rates of lime (0, 33, 67 and 100% of the amount calculated to raise soil base saturation to 70%) broadcast on soil surface plus the rate of 100% broadcast with incorporation in the 0-0.20 m layer of a clayey Red Oxisol. Soil and leaf samples were collected at two vegetative stages of the crop (vegetative V4 and blossoming R2). The soil was sampled at depths of 0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20, and 0.20-0.30 m. Surface liming had little effect on extractable soil micronutrient and nutrient concentrations in soybean...

Effect of seafloor depth on phytoplankton blooms in high-nitrate, low-chlorophyll (HNLC) regions ArchiMer
Tyrrell, T.; Merico, A.; Waniek, J. J.; Wong, C. S.; Metzl, N.; Whitney, F..
We calculated correlations between seafloor depth and phytoplankton blooms in all three main high-nitrate, low-chlorophyll (HNLC) regions, but with a particular focus on the subarctic North Pacific area. It has long been known that the central parts of the east and west subarctic North Pacific are HNLC regions. The deep western basin of the Bering Sea is also HNLC, whereas the wide continental shelf of the eastern Bering Sea is not. We carried out a statistical comparison of spatial maps of (1) seafloor depth and (2) chlorophyll a concentration from satellite data. This comparison reveals that shallow waters have, on average, higher peak chlorophyll a concentrations (more intense phytoplankton blooms) than deep waters (p << 0.01). Possible artifacts...

Etude des polluants chimiques (Cu, Fe, Zn, Cd et Hg) dans les moules (<Perna perna>) prélevées au niveau de la baie du Lévrier. OceanDocs
Dartige, A.Y..
